"What's New Downtown"
by Rita Edwards, February 2007
"What do I have to do to be a member of the Sulphur Springs Downtown Business Alliance?" is a question I am asked on a regular basis.
The answer is....just show up!! You don't have to own a business. You don't have to own a business on or near the square. You don't have
to own property on or near the square. All you have to do is start attending our meetings and you will quickly be put to work!! We need
people that have a genuine desire to help bring the downtown back to the thriving area it use to be. If you visit other cities comparable in
size or smaller that have revitalized their downtown area, just shook your head and left wondering why ours is so lacking, then you're the
one that we want. We can do this without you, but it would be so much easier with you. So please don't hesitate, don't speculate, don't
procrastinate, just activate!! We meet every Wednesday morning at Judy's Kitchen from 8am to 9am, and we also have a monthly meeting
where we try to have a guest speaker. Those meetings fall on the second Monday of each month at 6:15pm at Plain N' Fancy. If you don't
know where these restaurants are located then let me tell you. Judy's Kitchen is at 307 Main St., and Plain N' Fancy is on the south side of
the square next door to the tax office.
When you come, you'll learn that we have planned our year, and we have some very exciting ideas in the works. We have set up four
committees and elected chairpersons for each one. They have already started pitching ideas and developing a game plan. We are backing
the reactivation of our Main Street USA status, which will free up grant money and present valuable venues of support. A couple of the
committees are dedicated to the beautification of the square. Which includes some really exciting projects you won't believe. It's going to
be just fantastic when completed. The Sulphur Springs Downtown Business Alliance members have set some ambitious goals, but we have
just the group of individuals that can accomplish them. So, if you're interested in what we are doing and want to be a part of it, then come
on down and join us. We will be looking for you at our next meeting.
Until next time, keep asking, "What's new downtown?"
“What’s New Downtown?”
by Rita Edwards, May 2007
Hey, remember me? I know it’s been a while but things have been really crazy! Have you noticed anything new downtown at all? The
dead trees are gone, the planters have been moved and are now full of greenery and flowers. Several members of the Downtown Business
Alliance adopted seven of the planters and most of them have been filled. The others will be finished very soon. The City is in the process
of deciding on what type of tree to replant and plan on having them in by fall. They are also looking into the best type of irrigation system
to install, as well.
We have been very busy working on several projects for the downtown that will be of great benefit. Our members have steadily been
forming partnerships with other groups to accomplish some of these projects. Unfortunately, I can’t go into detail right now, but be
assured as soon as the details have been ironed out, YOU will be the first to know. We are very excited about the possibilities that these
projects will present.
If you’ll remember in my last article I told you I was going to feature a downtown business beginning with this article. So here goes:
Everything Unique is owned and operated by Brad and Holly Massey. Purchasing Micki’s Interiors in 1998 was an exciting decision for
Holly, who said, “Offering a complete décor store was always a dream for me but, I never thought I could do it since I am not an actual
Interior Designer. I Love challenges and with my business degree this one was definitely a challenge.” They both knew they wanted a
business downtown, because they feel the downtown area of any city is what makes a town so special. Brad and Holly have worked very
hard to achieve the success they enjoy today. Holly said that she could not have done this without Brad’s support and help. Whenever
possible, both their daughters, Cara and Meredith, help out making it a true family affair. They also have a very talented staff working
with them offering not only the best of home décor items, but the expertise as well. Everything Unique offers art, lamps, florals, new
accent furniture pieces, fabrics, and candles. They offer over 200 rolls of fabric for window treatments, bedding and furniture. Pauline
Flora works with Holly and Brad creating beautiful custom window treatments, bedding, and they can recover just about anything. All
this at very competitive prices. They carry a very unique line of candles such as Trapp Candles, which have a bottle of perfume in every
candle. Also, Beanpod Candles which are made with 100 % soybean wax, making them a clean burning candle. They have a new line of
candles called “Ornamentation Candles” that are made right here in Sulphur Springs and are unbelievable! They also carry Lamp Berger,
which is a fuel burning lamp that not only fragrances the air, but purifies it as well. A new service offered at Everything Unique is a bridal
registry. Offering a line of Casafina Stoneware which is a very practical item for today’s bride, as well as a unique selection of other
tabletop items to compliment the Casafina Stoneware. Not to mention everything else they have to offer. Brad and Holly go all out at
Christmas, and if you have never been in their store at Christmas, well let me tell you, put it on your calendar and go this year! They offer
some of the most unusual and “unique” decorations for the seasons you will ever find. Holly says she has alot of new items she will be
adding over the next twelve months that she is very excited about. She also said, “I would like to say Thank You for “10” Wonderful
Years on the Square” and to watch for specials the rest of 2007 to celebrate their ten year anniversary. Everything Unique is open Monday
through Saturday 10:00am to 5:00pm and is an experience well worth the drive downtown.
Until next time, keep asking, “What’s new downtown?”

“What’s New Downtown?”
by Rita Edwards, July 2007
Hi Everyone! My goodness have we been busy. Remember I told you in my last article that we were working on several projects and I
would tell you about them as soon as I could? Well, here goes. We have partnered with the Hopkins County Veterans Memorial Board on a
project that is in the development stages for a Memorial that will be nothing short of awe inspiring! We are very excited to be involved in
this project, which includes a Pavilion over the stage. The entire “Park” will be complimentary of the Courthouse. It will be the equivalent
of a beautiful mounting with the Courthouse as the diamond it’s show casing! It will afford a welcoming view of the downtown when you
arrive at the 4 way stop on Oak by the Baptist Church. You will be compelled to stop on the square to visit the park and pay tribute to our
local veterans in the most breath taking setting you could ever imagine. It’s going to knock your socks off!! I’ll keep you posted as this
project progresses.
We are also in the process of applying for our Main Street USA City recertification. Which would be a tremendous boost for the downtown.
It opens up so many sources and avenues for the downtown that is not available to us now. Every Main Street City we have visited told us
that they would not have been successful had it not been for this designation. We can use your help in our recertification process, too. If
you feel as we do, please write a letter of support for the revitalization of our downtown and express your support of our efforts and how
you think the Main Street designation would benefit us. Call anyone of our members and we will be happy to come by and pick the letter
up. You can go to our website for a list of members and contact numbers (www.ssdba.org) or call me at 903-885-1236. The Main Street
Director met with us and told us that there are only 5 cities selected each year and of those 5 only 2 cities are selected as recertification’s. So
as you can see, we are up against some pretty high odds, so the more letters of support from the community and business owners the better
our chances. Of course, we have to get the approval of the City Council first. We are on the agenda for the July 3rd meeting, and hope to
have a large turn out of supporters and would love to show them all of the letters of support we have received.
We hosted the first Round Table Discussion on June 21st, which was very successful. We invited every member of the City Council, the City
Manager, County Judge, all four County Commissioners, our Mayor, the EDC Director and Community Development Director, the Director
of Tourism, President and Interim President of the Chamber Board, President of the Revitalization Board, Presidents of all four banks,
Director of the Hospital Foundation and the media. The following were in attendance, Yoland Williams- Mayor, Marc Maxwell-City
Manager, Freddy Taylor-City Council and President of the Chamber Board, Debra Wright-President Elect of the Chamber Board, Beth
Wisenbaker and Danny Evans-County Commissioners, Johnny Vance-Community Development Director, Roger Feagley-EDC Director, Craig
Roberts-President of Guaranty Bond Bank, Bill Bradford-KSST and Bobby McDonald-Front Porch News. Everyone had a lot of great ideas
and expressed an interest in meeting once a month. Other towns have been very successful in doing this, so we thought it would be a great
idea for us to do the same. It’s a great way to share ideas and pool our resources to achieve the projects and goals that we all have for the
community. By doing this we can accomplish a great deal more in a shorter period of time. I look forward to our next meeting and firmly
believe that nothing but positive things will come from it.
We’ve also been working with the City on the reconstruction of Main Street. It’s going to be so much nicer than it ever has been! They are
scheduled to begin very soon, and we are very excited about it! It’s going to be a little inconvenient for a while, but the end result will be
well worth the wait and trouble. So please bear with us during this time.
Have you heard about the springs that the City uncovered during their excavation? It’s really exciting and we have ideas for that as well.
What a great way to showcase our history of how we came to be known as “Sulphur Springs.” Once the excavation of the creek is finished
the City has terrific plans for an old time Farmers Market behind City Hall along the creek. There are several different ideas for the springs,
and it remains to be seen what actually happens, but it will be truly an asset to the downtown.
I hope you will make an appearance this Saturday for the Downtown Sidewalk Sale prior to the 4th of July Concert. Several stores will be
participating and will be open all day. Then we invite you to hang around and attend the concert and fireworks that evening in front of
Alliance Bank, who by the way, will be celebrating their 80th Anniversary. Congratulations to Alliance Bank from every member of the
Sulphur Springs Downtown Business Alliance!!
Did you see our float in the Dairy Festival Parade? Boy, it was beautiful, even if I do say so myself! We have some really talented folks in
our organization and you can transfer that talent to the future of our downtown any day of the week!! We have a lot of things planned for
the downtown and hope you will enjoy each and every thing we do.
If you would like to be a part of this very exciting time, and the future of our downtown and community, then “come on down” and join us.
We meet once a week and every second Monday night of the month. Just contact me or go to our website for any information you might
need. I didn’t have room this time to feature another business and I apologize for that, but I’ll do it in the next week or two. I promise.
So until next time, keep asking, “What’s new downtown?”

Well, I guess you’ve heard by now what happened with the Main Street USA application. If not, this is it in a nutshell. Prior to the City
Council Meeting of July 3rd, City Manager, Marc Maxwell presented us his plan for the Revitalization of downtown, using the money that
would have been allocated for the salary of a full time Main Street Director. The Sulphur Springs Downtown Business Alliance met and
discussed in great length after his presentation and decided to support his plan. The City Council was in agreement that his plan would be
the best option. We did express to the City Council and Mr. Maxwell that we would continue to work on the application, and if we do not
see any progress over the next year, we will most certainly return and in larger numbers. We are willing to work with Mr. Maxwell and the
City Council to achieve the many projects that he has planned, because we are all in the same boat. We want the same thing for the
downtown, and we don’t care how we get there, just as long as we get there but at a steady pace. Mr. Maxwell agreed with our request for
accountability. Three members of the Downtown Business Alliance will meet with Mr. Maxwell at least once a month to be updated on
planned projects and the progress of each as they develop. The first project is to reconstruct Main Street. A new parking plan had been
approved by the Business Alliance, Revitalization Board and the City Council, then one of the council members, who was absent when it was
approved, requested it be reconsidered. So that has been delayed another month. I guess that’s the nature of the beast, have a plan, have it
visible, get it approved with everyone involved, then “hello” somebody throws a monkey wrench in the plan. Oh well, I suppose it will
work out for the best, keep your fingers crossed!
I will keep you posted as projects are presented, implemented and completed. Optimistic, huh? You bet, we think it’s going to be great.
Now don’t think for one minute that we are kidding ourselves. We know this is going to be a long hard pull, up hill, with the emergency
brake on!!! But, we’re up to the challenge and will keep our promise to be the proverbial “thorn in their side” through this entire process.
We would like to offer a sincere “Thank You” to everyone that wrote letters of support, and rest assured we will use them if the need arises.
The response from the community to support us has been over whelming and greatly appreciated. It’s been absolutely amazing to witness
the number of people that have called, come by or stopped one of us in a store or on the street to express how much they support our
efforts. The desire is there and that’s a great thing.
Our Sidewalk Sale was a big success. There was a huge crowd downtown for the 4th of July celebration. Thank you again for patronizing
our downtown merchants and we hope you will continue to do so.
Also, when you’re driving into Sulphur Springs from the West on I-30 look for our new billboard! It’s going to be located right before you
get to Exit 101 on the south side of the I-30. Several of the downtown merchants pooled together to pay for the rent and the Sulphur Springs
Downtown Business Alliance underwote the cost of the lettering and installation. The rain has delayed the installation, but we are hoping it
will go up one day this week. It’s great and it will encourage people to exit off the Interstate and enjoy our wonderful town. We hope they
will not only shop and dine but also visit our Courthouse, Dairy Museum, Heritage Museum, and perhaps stay the night to explore all of
Sulphur Springs. Please check it out!
Now, as promised, here is another business located downtown that you need to visit.
Brumley’s Uniforms located on the west side of the square at 109 N. Gilmer opened in 1970. Lois Brumley is the matriarch of Brumley’s
Uniforms. After operating a dairy for 30 years, she retired but did not slow down. She then went into nursing at Hopkins County Memorial
Hospital! She was a very talented seamstress and made her own uniforms. Her ability to make custom uniforms, that not only fit properly
but were professional, prompted her co-workers to request her services, which became so overwhelming she decided to open a business,
hence, Brumley's Uniforms.
In December, 1999 Mrs. Brumley’s daughter, Judy Brumley Watts and her husband, Mike, purchased the business. Mrs. Brumley has retired
once again, but the name of the business remains the same as a tribute to her mother, according to Judy.
Judy and Mike are very proud of their business and the service they offer the community. Brumley’s Uniforms offers a complete line of high
quality uniforms, shoes and accessories. Whatever your profession they have the size, color and style you might need. They service Hopkins
County as well as surrounding Counties.
It is Judy and Mike’s hope that someday they will pass the business on to one or all of their children, Cody and Danielle Williams of Sulphur
Springs, Tiffany Watts of Memphis, Tn, and Trey Watts of Sulphur Springs. Brumley’s Uniforms will surely continue for many years to come
and what a wonderful legacy.
Brumley’s Uniforms is open Monday through Friday, 10:00am to 5:00pm and Saturday, 10:00am to 3:00pm. So, stop in and visit with Judy
when you’re downtown looking around.
So until next time, keep asking, “What’s new downtown?”

“What’s New Downtown?”, August 8, 2007
by Rita Edwards
Man alive, are things happening around here? Yes indeed, they are!! We are being constantly approached by both local and out of towner’s
that are interested in a building downtown to open a business!! What is even more fantastic is the variety of businesses that are showing
interest. We met with a couple of guys that have a café/bistro in Oak Cliff who are very interested in opening one here on Main Street!
They even have a name already picked out, how does “Sulphur Nites”sound? Pretty cool, huh? Word is spreading about our plans and it
seems everyone wants to get in on the action and NOW…isn’t that great?
I hope you’ve had a chance to see the billboard that several downtown merchants put up on the Interstate. It is so pretty and very eye
catching! The picture in the paper was GREAT but really doesn’t do it justice. The picture of the Courthouse is beautiful. The businesses
that went together and paid for a year of advertising are Town Square Antique Mall, Plain & Fancy Sandwich Shoppe, Everything Unique,
Sentimental Journeys, Mimi’s Antiques and Junque, Belle Amie Spa, Irene’s Downtown, Main St. Treasures, Custom Threads & Embroidery,
Hampton House Gifts, Judy’s Kitchen and Audrey’s Fabrics. I applaud these businesses for stepping up and working together to promote
Sulphur Springs. I hope you will patronize and thank them for their efforts to bring visitors to our town. You know that’s what it’s all
about. Everything we do is for the entire community. I don’t want you to think that the Downtown Business Alliance is only focused on the
downtown. Yes, we are working diligently to revitalize downtown, to bring businesses back, to encourage all of you to shop downtown, but
the reality of it all is to promote Sulphur Springs as a whole. We want to make Sulphur Springs a tourist attraction. Our goal is to have so
much to offer, that people will make this a destination, filling up our hotels, increasing the shopping all over Sulphur Springs, not just
downtown. So when you hear me or any of our members talking about what’s going on downtown, just remember we support Sulphur
Springs and Hopkins County as one.
Have you heard about the Ikea contest that ten of our local businesses entered. The contest Ikea developed was to help small towns that are
renovating their downtown business district. So, Susan Jones of Sentimental Journeys got on the ball and planned the video. She enlisted
Doug Hasten of KSST to video and edit the tape and then she, Tammy Olague and Jeff Post downloaded and entered the video.
Unfortunately we didn’t win, but you know, this was fantastic exposure for Sulphur Springs, because Ikea is worldwide and our wonderful
community was visited by people all over the world. That’s pretty awesome!
Now to bring you up to speed with what’s going on with the City’s plans. Our three member panel, Susan Jones, Tammy Olague and I met
with Marc Maxwell last Wednesday. He informed us that Ina Lockwood, who specializes in designing areas to be pedestrian friendly will be
here August 28th, 29th and 30th, along with his design team. The first day they will walk the town and speak with people and then meet
with City staff, the three of us and a few other people. Wednesday they will work up a design and on Thursday make their presentation and
recommendations. Mr. Maxwell has also asked Susan, Tammy and I to consider attending a seminar in New York in October to help us
understand the “Mall” concept of his plan. Many cities are taking this approach so as to make their downtown areas more pedestrian
friendly instead of focusing mainly on traffic flow. The way I understand it, the idea is to slow traffic down to not only make it safer, but to
encourage people to notice what’s around them and to create park like settings. Speaking of taking notice, we saw the first drawing of the
Veterans Memorial and all I can say is “Wow”! There were representatives from the City, County, Veterans Board and Downtown Business
Alliance present at the unveiling by the architect. It’s really something and will be interesting to see how everyone likes it. I think the plans
are to display it at City National Bank and Alliance Bank in the very near future.
And now for the feature business of the week. Studio 222 located at 222 Main Street is owned and operated by Debra Bohannon, but don’t
call her Debra, she goes by “Bo” and has a very interesting past. Studio 222 offers the musically inclined quality sound recording services at
a reasonable price. She offers a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere where even the beginner can feel at ease. Her musical career began in 1979
when she joined her first band called Elvis “79 and Fusion. After about a year and half she moved to Dallas and played with various groups
until moving back here. Bo took a break from the music industry and went into the construction business which lasted for 20 years. Then
about six years ago the world of music lured her back and she produced a CD for the Bobby Coffman’s Underground Band. With all the
equipment accumulated over the years and necessary in the production and promotion of a CD she decided to open a studio and help up and
coming musicians. So for all you aspiring singers and musicians out there, this is the place to go. So go by and check out Bo’s studio and
reap the benefit of her years of experience.
So until next time, keep asking, “What’s new downtown?”

“What’s New Downtown?” - October 19, 2007
by Rita Edwards
Hi, remember me? It’s been a while, but I have a really good excuse!!
We have been so busy it’s hard to imagine, even for me, and I’ve got a really good imagination. Believe me, myself nor any of my co-harts
ever thought this would explode like it has. It’s great, we’re not complaining mind you. It just seems like it was meant to be, like the good
Lord is smiling down on us, all our stars are in line, and somebody’s rabbit’s foot is extra charmed!! Don’t know what it is but we will most
certainly take full advantage of it.
The Downtown Business Alliance has grown in numbers and what’s so great about that is we have new members with businesses from all
over Sulphur Springs, not just downtown! Just goes to show how the revitalization of downtown can benefit our entire community. We had
a Chamber Mixer, which was a huge success, thanks to Judge Robert Newsome, Judge Cletis Millsap and Commissioner Beth Wisenbaker
who got the ball rolling for us to use the District Courtroom. A big thanks to Bob Weaver of the Chamber for all his help and support, and
to everyone that attended.
You know I told you last time about our billboard West of town in my last article, well now we have one on the East side of Sulphur Springs
too. So when entering Sulphur Springs from either direction you’ll see our signs. They look so good, and both were donated to us, and you
can’t beat that!! We have been so blessed to have so much support, “Thank You” just doesn’t seem appropriate, but Thank You from the
bottom of our hearts, to the folks that donated both signs. They wanted to remain anonymous, so I can’t tell you who they are.
I guess you’ve heard by now about the second drawing for the downtown, which was a surprise from Ian Lockwood. He was the Traffic
Design Specialists that the City brought in to design Main Street. He had talked to all of the business owners on Main Street and several
around the square concerning what they would like to see happen, and when he saw the design that had already been presented he took it
upon himself to design the downtown to co-incide with the Main Street design. It was drawn with some very forward thinking and so far,
everyone that I have encountered loves his drawing. Oh, sure there are some remarks like, “I’m not sure that will work” statements, but
then they say that for the most part they really like it. I think both designs have merit and we just need to step back and take the best of
both and go from there. But at any rate, both designs have really generated some excitement and as a result of that excitement, several
people have contacted us about empty buildings. They want to know what’s for sale or rent, the size of the building, etc., so a couple of our
members, Billie Ruth Stanbridge and Becky Flippin worked very hard assembling a binder with all that information. It contains almost
everything one might want to know about any property in the downtown core. Some buildings have already sold and others are under
contract. Big plans are in the works, with some really cool businesses planning on opening downtown. We already have two new businesses
open, Secrets Day Spa and Salon on Main Street owned by Liesa Neal and Belle Amie Day Spa and Salon on the square owned by Susan
Graddick. Both offer unique services to pamper you. I hope you will visit with them and enjoy the many services they offer. Remember, I
told you about the guys from Oak Cliff that plan to open a coffee shop on Main Street? Well, they have purchased another building where
they plan to open a Steak House!! I can’t say for sure what some of the other buildings will be used for, I’ve only heard rumors, and so you’
ll just have to wait to find out what else may be coming. But one thing is for sure, this snow ball has topped the hill and is gaining speed!!
Speaking of Main Street, the new design for Main Street was presented to the Revitalization Board and the City Council and unanimously
approved. It’s anticipated that work will begin on Main Street in January or February. When it’s finished it will be so nice you will be
looking for ways to travel Main Street!! The City is working on the utilities in T-Bond Alley, so we’re off and running. Mr. Maxwell has
pitched the idea of establishing the TIF Fund (Tax Increment Financing) to the City Council and the County Commissioners. Which is a great
way to finance the cost of the proposed changes to the downtown. Which is proof positive that the City is fully and completely behind us
and ready to work shoulder to shoulder with us to achieve our goals. As I mentioned, he presented it to the County Commissioners and
they agreed to waive the 60 day notice, so hopefully they will approve to be a part of the TIF program when it is formally presented to
them. You see, if the taxing entities agree to be part of the program then what ever percentage they agree to give will go into the fund and
every penny will go back into the downtown for improvements and facades grants. So let’s hope that the County and Hospital will be fully
supportive, and I don’t know why they wouldn’t because the money in the fund will absolutely be dedicated to just that. It doesn’t take
away from their funds in any way and they would be a part of the future of the downtown. Okay, I’ll get off my soap box now.
I have to reveal to you that in my last article I made two, not one, but two major faux pas’! For all my redneck friends, that means I messed
up big time!! And, no I’m not making fun of rednecks, cause sometimes I “are one”!! Anyway, when I listed the merchants that paid for the
years rent on the billboard West of town I left off one business. That was Half Price Hand Bags owned by Jennifer Allison and her husband
John. As you all know, Jennifer was the founding president of the Downtown Business Alliance and major reason why the Alliance is what it
is today. I apologize from the bottom of my heart. The other mistake I made was concerning Studio 222, I forgot to mention a very valuable
person and that without his assistance Debra Bohannon said she wouldn’t be able to have the quality studio she has. His name is Lynn
Robinson, and he manages the studio. She said he is totally indispensable!! Once again I apologize.
I don’t have a feature business this time, because I haven’t received the information I need from the business drawn out of the hat just yet, so
you’ll just have to wait until next time.
So until next time, keep asking, “What’s new downtown?”

“What’s New Downtown?” - March 1, 2008
by Rita Edwards
Hey, Hey, I can’t believe my last article was in October, my how time flies when your having fun!!! Boy, have we been having fun with
everything that’s been going on. I don’t know where to begin and if I told you everything in this article it would take up several pages. So I
guess I’ll just fill you in a little at a time, you know spread it out over several articles. Okay where to begin, oh yeah, the Christmas Festival
was a huge success!! We had a great crowd for the lighting on Friday night and I hope you noticed the lights that outlined the buildings.
Wes Hampton got up on there and replaced burned out bulbs and fixed broken wires and secured the lights so they wouldn’t move. He
worked really hard and it looked awesome. We had a new addition to our decorations with the donation of an honest to goodness, real life,
sleigh. Ron & Linda Johnson donated it and it was great. Saturday we had live entertainment on stage all day hosted by Enola Gay and even
Elvis was “in the house”!! We had several vendors, our ever popular, Barrel Train rides and bed races. This year we had a new attraction
with the White Lions. Fun was had by all. I know you’ve heard by now that there will be a new twist on Christmas this year with the Lions
Club switching to the Nighttime Electric Light Parade. It’s going to be so much fun and really neat. We are so proud to be working with
them in conjunction with our Christmas Festival. The Lions Club, the Downtown Business Alliance, Chamber of Commerce and the City of
Sulphur Springs all working together to pull this off is just one more example of our community coming together to create something special.
The Downtown Business Alliance made out like bandits at the Annual Chamber of Commerce Banquet. We are very proud of the Vision
Award the Downtown Business Alliance received. What a great feeling to be recognized for our efforts by the Chamber and the community
we love so much. Several of our members received awards that night, too. Sandy Wallace owner of Plain N’ Fancy was named Small
Business of the Year, Jackie Thornton, Foundation Director for Hopkins County Hospital was named Ambassador of the Year, and, uh um, I
was named Woman of the Year !! That was a total surprise, but my word what an honor!!! All of the accolades we received are very
humbling but totally awesome !!!
Well, the Main Street project is off and running. The city completed the water/sewer line repairs in T-Bone Alley and on Main Street. They
will be back very soon to begin completely redoing Main Street. New sidewalks, new street, trees, landscaping, etc., and it’s going to be
beautiful. Just remember that while all that work is being done, the businesses along Main Street will still be open and will need your support
more than ever! So, don’t let a little construction keep you from shopping with them. Also, the red lights are gone at Main and Connally,
being replaced with four way stop signs. It’s amazing how much more open and clean it looks without those big metal poles and red lights.
Just one more step in the right direction toward the revitalization plan for the downtown.
Okay, I said I was going to spread the information out over several articles so I guess this is a good place to stop.
So until next time, keep asking, “What’s new downtown?”
